Key Verse: Luke 14:26 ESV
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
Modern day Christianity has been redefined to consist of spiritual experiences that gives a warm fuzzy feeling inside and teleports us into a life of blessings that says “if you ask the Father, you shall receive it”. We become secure in our beautifully adorned churches, spectacular worship events and blessings of life. However, this is totally contrary to the life that we are called to live. Jesus has called us not just to be a Christian, but to be His Disciple. As disciples we are called to be followers of Christ who not just love the benefits, but the life He is calling us to. Jesus told His disciples “in this world you will have trouble” (Jn. 16:33), and he reminded them that the world would hate them (Jn. 15:18). He calls His children to “count the cost” of following Him by understanding the need to lay everything down for His sake. We must be willing to sacrifice pleasures, distractions, material possessions, and even family. Not only do we count the cost of being a disciple, but we count the cost of not being one. Counting the cost is about facing the consequences of the decisions we make in life whether they are for God or not. Join us this month as we pick up our cross and count the cost of becoming a disciple of Christ.
