Key Verse: Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23
There is no other organ more important to the body than our heart. It is the center of what keeps all of our other organs functioning. Scripture shows us it is the spiritual part of us where our emotions and desires live. We read that our hearts our equally important to our relationship with God. We are cautioned to guard it above all else (Pr 4:23) and love God with all of it (Lk. 10:27). The heart is what God sees in us (1 Sam. 16:7) and the purity of our heart allows us to see God (Mt. 5:8). He searches our hearts and rewards us according to what He finds in it (Jer. 17:10).
But Scripture also tells us that our hearts cannot be trusted because it is deceitful (Jer. 17:9) and will fail us (Ps. 73:26). It is the place we keep secrets (Ps. 44:21) and where evil dwells (Mk. 7:21). So, what do we make of all this? How do we manage this vital part of our being and what is God telling us in His Word?
