Key Verse: Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Nearly 600 years before the birth of our Savior, the prophet Isaiah prophesied that the King would come. In a time filled with failed rulers not much different than today, Isaiah looked into a future when God would rule the earth through His Son. His declarations speak of a King who would take upon His shoulders the responsibilities of establishing God’s Kingdom government. A King who clears all confusion and uncertainty because He is our “Wonderful Counselor”. A King who would establish order in the midst of our chaos as “Mighty God”. A King who seeks to defy all confusion of our identity as “Everlasting Father”. A King, who as the “Prince of Peace”, will bring peace to our lives as we receive His grace, surrender to Him in faith, and walk with Him daily.
He came with a mission. He came on assignment to be about His Father’s business (Lk. 2:49). To destroy the works of the enemy (1 Jn. 3:8) and the religious spirit (Mat. 23). To give us the gift of the Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:16), and fulfill God’s plan to seek and save the lost (Lk. 19:10). He came to reconcile our relationship back to God (2 Cor. 5:18) and validate our identity as sons and daughters of the Father (Eph. 1:5).
As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas, let us remember that He has come for more than just lights, ornaments and gifts. “The King has Come” to fulfill, establish, and bring us hope of an eternal Kingdom.
